Information: Martin Maingaud was a French artist at the service of European nobility as a portrait painter. He especially worked at the Bavarian court, where he portrayed many famous people. The painting at hand portrays Carlo Alberto of Bayern in one of his first portraits. The young age of the subject is in sharp contrast with an overly-regal and static pose, which would be unnatural for a child of this age. The garments themselves are in contrast with the tender age and innocence of this child.
