A simple Venetian chest dating back to the mid-1600s. We can state that the chest was probably of provincial origins because the design and shape are very minimalist and there are no large ornamental motifs. The piece was produced entirely in solid walnut, both inside and out. The use of such valuable wood suggests that the chest was most likely built specially as a gift or offering. In Italy, when a wedding was celebrated, it was customary for the bride’s family to collect a series of objects (linens, crockery, furniture, dishes) that would be used by the bride in the new home and during her new life as a married woman. Therefore this chest might have been built specially to contain the bride’s “dowry”.
The piece has not undergone drastic restoration, but simply a careful cleaning of the wood. We will be happy to answer all your questions and satisfy your curiosity about this piece of furniture.
