Reproduction of «Virgin with Child and St. John the Baptist as a child» attributed to Innocenzo da Imola
Location: private collection
Era: XVI century
Information: the painting is a reproduction of the original which can be attributed to the artist Innocenzo da Imola. The subjects were a source of inspiration for the painter, who adapted the scene to his liking. The Virgin holds an infant Jesus who is no longer a new born, intent on exchanging a profound glance with his cousin, St. John the Baptist. Their faces are not contrite yet convey serenity, the same that is felt when faced with a new birth. St. John is depicted holding a cross, the symbol of Christianity and memory of Jesus’s crucifixion.
The frame, in the unusual shape of a heart, is originally from the 1700s and in Venetian lime wood. It was lacquered in 24K solid gold and painted azure. On the back of the frame one can see the residues of the old canvas that was removed brutally, perhaps during a theft. As this is an antique work of art, it is sold as it is represented in the photo.
