Reproduction of «Virgin and Child, St. John the Baptist as a child, St. Joseph, St. Andrew, St. Jerome, and St. Bartholomew» by Alessandro Turchi
Location: private collection of the Banco di San Geminiano e San Prospero
Era: early XVII century
Information: The painting depicts the Holy Family in the company of some saints, including St. Jerome, recognisable for his vicinity to the lion. The depiction of St. Jerome next to a lion makes reference to an old legend that narrates how the Saint succeeded in healing the animal suffering from a thorn in his paw. The figure of the Saint, represented kneeling while striking his chest with a stone, is in reference to the commissioner of the work. This individual must certainly have had special reasons for emphasising the importance of the figure of this Saint.
The frame was constructed by remodelling an important head jamb of a door originally from the end of the 1800s in Neoclassical style. The frame is in Italian walnut polished with water-based stain and shellac.
