Reproduction of «Winter» by Giuseppe Gambarini
Location: Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (Italy)
Era: 1721
Information: The author of this painting is Giuseppe Gambarini, a young artist who learnt and improved his artistic skills at the atelier of Girolamo Negri and Benedetto Gennari.
In this painting Gambarini sought to represent as best he could what winter meant to him. The scene that Gambarini offers is a common situation of popular inspiration. A mother is changing her new born while other people are engaged in different activities. Winter is represented by the indoor setting where the scene takes place, awash in a warm light, most likely from a fireplace that the viewer cannot see. The personages are wearing very heavy clothing – yet another indication of the cold season that is also the title of the work.
