Reproduction of the «Holy Family with two Angels forming a cross» by Pietro Liberi
Location: Palazzo dei Musei, Modena (Italy)
Era: 1652
Information: the Holy Family is depicted by the author in an urban setting. The faces and the columns are a backdrop to these personages, revealing one of the customs in vogue during that era. Usually the artists portrayed Biblical personages in contexts and settings of their times. The Virgin Mary is depicted here with the infant Jesus in her arms, while at her feet two infant angels are prostrated in adoration of Jesus. One of the two angels is pointing at a cross resting on the ground, perhaps as a reminder of the death of the Son of God. On the right we recognise St. Joseph gazing on his son with a father’s love. At his feet are the tools he uses in his work as a carpenter.
