This elegant and sophisticated representation of Mary with Jesus was created by hand and reflects the artist’s interpretation and idealization of the subject. The artist’s intent was to paint an altarpiece in old wood to depict the Madonna with her Son, in keeping with Renaissance canons.
The frame consists of two columns adorned with carved capitals, lending richness and majesty to the work.
Mary is depicted in a blue gown embellished with gold embroidery. The color blue was not a random choice, as during the Renaissance it stood for chastity. The Infant Jesus is seated comfortably on a red cushion that strongly recalls those used by wealthy nobles.
The backdrop to these two subjects does not feature a single color, which was characteristic of the Middle Ages, but rather depicts a landscape that piques the viewer’s curiosity and stimulates the imagination.
The delicacy of Mary’s embrace of Jesus evokes all the love and affection that only a mother can feel for her own child.
This work was painted entirely by hand.
