An antique chest constructed presumably during the late XVII century in Northern Italy. This chest has a very austere structure but is embellished on the front with carved decorations alternated with smooth shapes. To create this chest the craftsman used only Italian walnut. The four feet that support the body of the chest were created during the restoration, taking particular care to conform with the stylistic standards of the period. Moreover, the restorer filled in the keyhole with a cherry wood inlay in the shape of a four-leaf clover.
In order to appreciate this type of furniture from the 1400s and fully understand its characteristics, it is necessary to take into account the habits of the people who lived at that time. The overwhelming instability of life at that time marked by wars, conquests, and the absence of stable laws, gave rise to a scarce production of furniture, and what little there was had to be easy to transport and preferably suited to containing housewares. This is why one of the most commonly used pieces of furniture was the chest. Each antique piece of furniture has its own story that determines its value, its soul, and its uniqueness.
