Reproduction «Open-air concert» by Toeput Lodewijk (Ludovico Pozzoserrato)
Location: Museo Civico Luigi Bailo (Treviso)
Era: late XVI century
Information: the author of this work was born in Flanders and later migrated to Venice, Italy, so is essentially considered Italian.
In Venice he dedicated himself to art and to learning the techniques of Titian. The painting depicts subjects in a moment of leisure on a summer’s day. In the foreground there is the profile of a young maiden intent on playing a typical instrument of the sixteenth century: a virginal (a sort of harpsichord). In the mid-ground there is an Italian-style garden with asymmetric architectural elements. In the background are people out for a simple stroll in the open air. What catches the viewer’s eye are two couples portrayed perhaps during a summertime courtship.
