Elegant wall writing desk dating to the end of the nineteenth century from the Piedmont region. The writing desk recalls the stylistic features of the time period between 1815 and 1830, also known as the European Restoration. This decade was a transition period. Indeed the Italian furniture, like the French one, started to acquire more restrained sizes and more simplistic decorations. In other words, furniture started to be more functional than aesthetic. During those years, the use of of walnut along with lighter woods – like maple wood or cherry wood – renewed its popularity.
The cabinetmaker, that created this piece, made a perfect example of the stylistic characteristics of that time. It is possible to notice them though the arching of the front part, the straight sides, the turning of the legs and in the symmetrically processed elm briar.
Worthy of mention is the unique lockable drawer on the right destined for papers storage. Moreover, the desk contains an hidden space that will be revealed only to the future owner of this piece.
The writing desk has undergone a restoration and sanitizing process even though is was already in optimal shape at the time of discovery.
