Eclectic Italian Display Cabinet
Original Display Cabinet, Late 19th Century — Neoclassical with Baroque Influences.
This monumental display cabinet, dating from the late 19th century, is a striking example of 19th-century eclecticism, where Neoclassical and Baroque elements merge into a highly decorative composition.
The upper section recalls the architecture of a classical temple: fluted columns with Corinthian capitals support an elaborate cornice, crowned by a richly carved central pediment and flanked by two lateral sculptures depicting winged dragons. These figures, inspired by Italian Renaissance art and reinterpreted in 19th-century eclectic style, symbolize virtues such as vigilance, guardianship, and military valor.
The base, with two doors, mirrors the outline of the upper section and rests on goat’s-foot legs, a typical motif of Italian Rococo. Traditionally, a piece of this importance would have been placed in the most prestigious rooms of a home, serving as a symbol of status and refinement.
The current finish, achieved through layered lacquering with a deliberately antiqued effect in two light tones, softens the monumentality of the cabinet, making it suitable even for contemporary interiors. A true masterpiece, it can harmonize beautifully with both classic and modern décors.
