Antique chest that can be dated at the late 1600s, bearing unique, hand-carved rosettes. The two legs that support the body of the chest are carved in scrolls and are the only Baroque-style details in this piece. Probably the chest came from the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. The wood used to construct this chest is Italian walnut, with the exception of the bottom, which was successively replaced in wood from a fruit tree. Given the age of this chest, it must certainly have changed owner many times.
The plug of a different colour above the central rosette is a characteristic that we decided to leave unchanged, as it stands witness to the long life and changes that this chest undoubtedly underwent. This plug covers the space that at one time would have held the lock: it was most likely intended to contain something very precious and important, but we will never know exactly what.
