An antique sideboard dating back to the mid-XVIII century from the region of Emilia-Romagna. This sideboard has a rectangular form and comprises two drawers framed by three carved capitals and two squared doors. The top presents a note-worthy characteristic: the frame, which lends thickness to the top, is embellished by fingernail-shaped carvings along three sides. Another peculiarity is the particularly dark colour of the wood. This colour, created through the use of bitumen, derives from a pictorial technique that was commonly adopted above all in the region of Emilia-Romagna. Thanks to this very important detail, we were able to definitively confirm the origins of this sideboard.
During the conservative restoration of this sideboard, the restorer was able to ascertain that the material used in its construction is solid walnut. As we have already mentioned, the dark colour resulting from the use of bitumen was maintained as similar as possible to the original, but was slightly lightened during the restoration intervention.
