A faithful reproduction of a trumeau with a drop leaf from the mid-1700s in Veneto. The presence of the burl veneer as a decorative elements confirms that this piece was originally from the Veneto region. This technique was indeed commonly used in northern Italy and especially in Veneto. Nowadays it is very difficult to find craftsmen capable of reproducing this traditional woodworking technique. The burl used is walnut and is contoured by cherry wood filleting. The front of the trumeau’s base presents a double «-s-shaped» movement that joins the sides, which are also in a concave form. Always on the lower part, there are three large drawers that can be used to store any type of object. The top consists of a split coping that holds a small mirror, typical of eighteenth-century trumeaus. The presence of mirrors is a curiosity that is worth a few words. In the past trumeaus were positioned in large halls used for receptions and banquets. The function of mirrors, mostly incorporated in the highest parts of the secretary desk, was to reflect the light produced by large candle chandeliers hanging from the magnificently decorated ceilings.
